Dr. Juan Martinez
Dr. Juan was born in Pontiac, MI, and later moved to Puerto Rico. From a very young age, his parents taught him how to work hard and go the extra mile whenever possible.
However, growing up, he was never the most active kid and didn’t take care of himself. At one point, he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, having to take monthly steroid injections to keep his pain at bay. During high school, he suffered an injury that prevented him from walking and required him to go into rehab.
This was when he decided that he needed to take care of himself and be more active. Dr. Juan started training and managed to lose 40 lbs. in 3 months, getting in the best shape he had ever been in. He felt so great with his accomplishment that he wanted to help others achieve the same and studied Kinesiology at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, PR, and became a personal trainer.
While working as a personal trainer, he suffered an unexplained ankle injury during a group workout session. It got so bad that he couldn’t work because of the constant limping and pain. Eventually, he went to the ER but was only given pain medication with little to no effectiveness after 1 week. Luckily, someone recommended he go see a chiropractor, and after receiving a while of care, he hadn’t even noticed he wasn’t limping until his mom pointed it out.
This experience inspired Dr. Juan to start Chiropractic School at Life University in Marietta, GA, because he realized he could help even more people reach the best version of themselves and keep them that way for the rest of their lives. This is also where he met his beautiful wife, Dr. Zuleyka.
While at Life University, Dr. Juan and Zuleyka went on a Mission trip to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, where they served over 800 people, further strengthening their belief in Chiropractic and themselves. Dr. Juan also served at one of the largest and most successful Chiropractic Offices in the state of Georgia, Discover Chiropractic, under the guidance of Drs. Jeremy Hess, Amanda Hess, and Chandler Cook.
Some fun facts about Dr. Juan:
During his free time, he still trains regularly and enjoys playing video games
Even though he tries to avoid it, he still loves sweets from time to time after Dr. Zuleyka approves it
His favorite food is Mofongo, a traditional Puerto Rican plate of fried mashed plantain, and skirt steak
Dr. Zuleyka was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Growing up, her favorite school subject was science. Once in high school, her passion for research and science led her to explore ways to get healthy, reach optimal health, and apply it to herself, ultimately achieving her goals of getting active and staying healthy.
Dr. Zuleyka studied Biology during her time at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico in Ponce, PR, while continuing her regular training regimen. During this time, she took a brief break from her studies to enlist in the US Army and complete her Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT). Once completed, she returned to finish her studies while serving. She also discovered that she had a passion for competing with herself, and started in various events such as marathons, cross country, and later down the line, CrossFit.
At this point in her life, Dr. Zuleyka had her first child. Having had this miracle in her life, she looked back at her own childhood and saw how unhealthy she was and all the people surrounding her living with constant doctor’s appointments and medications. She wanted to make a change. She wanted to attend medical school, but felt there could be another way to get people to their optimal state. She started researching more holistic ways of helping people and found Chiropractic and how it could change people’s lives.
Dr. Zuleyka Cruz
ltimately, she applied and was accepted to both, but decided to attend chiropractic school, where she met her husband, Dr. Juan. Something to note is that after all this time, Dr. Zuleyka had never received an adjustment. She received it the week before starting Chiropractic School and felt immediate relief, was able to sleep for many hours, and felt rested. During her free time at Life University, she and Dr. Juan attended various seminars on many topics to grow their knowledge and keep up to date with current trends and topics in the health field.
Dr. Zuleyka served as a chiropractic student intern in the Chattanooga VA Hospital, where she gained advanced training and valuable experience in caring for Veterans and managing more complex cases.
